About two beer bells
The Trutnov chronicle states that fire bells were hung in the tower of the Upper Gate since 1555, which unfortunately too often announced a disaster. In 1571, however, the city council had to strengthen the equipment of the tower with a large beer bell, which announced the end of the evening drinking in pubs.
As soon as the last strike of the bell rang, the town mayor began to walk around the pubs with his helpers and expelled disobedient drunkards. The rampant ones were reported to the city council for punishment. Those who disobeyed were threatened with a fine and a ban on entering a pub, sometimes for a whole year.
However, the number of drunkards kept increasing, and many of them began to make excuses that during the wild partying the beer bell could not be heard. The lie repeated a thousand times is said to become true, and so the city council had another beer bell hung in the tower of the Upper Gate to cut out the outrageous excuses. It seems that the sound of two beer bells managed to reach the ears of the drinkers, because the chronicler mentions no further cases of nightly disturbance by the local bar visitors.
As you can see, the local people used to enjoy the golden drink very much, and that hasn´t changed until today.
